Socrates about Physical Health and Strength

“He who is only an athlete is too crude, too vulgar, too much a savage. He who is a scholar only is too soft, to effeminate. The ideal citizen is the scholar athlete, the man of thought and the man of action.”

– Plato

In Ancient Greece a philosopher was considered to be more than a mere intellectual.

Unlike the surplus of fat, skinny, weak and timid little college professors/scientists we have nowadays; the ancient philosophers held physical exercise and a strong, healthy body in high esteem.

Philosophy (‘Philo Sophia’) literally means “Love of Wisdom” in Greek, and therefore ancient Philosophers considered Physical exercise to be a main part of it, not to be neglected.

The Love of Wisdom goes hand in hand with the Love of physical heath.

Because how can a man claim to love wisdom, but his fat and unhealthy body neglects to outwardly portray any signs of being wise.

Socrates talked about this extensively during one of his last moments with his disciples.

One of his disciples, a man named “Epigenes” was neglecting his bodily exercise and therefore Socrates started schooling him on the importance of the matter.

This conversation takes place in the Memorabilia, a recollection of Socrates in word and deed, recorded by his Athenian student Xenophon.

“For in everything that men do the body is useful; and in all uses of the body it is of great importance to be in as high a state of physical efficiency as possible.”

Memorabilia: Book 3, Chapter 12, Section 5

Is there something which you do on a daily basis, for which you actually don’t use your body?

Think about it…

You literally use your body all the time and in all endeavors.

That is why I truly don’t understand why there are obese people walking around everywhere I go.

How can you be obese and still function correctly?

You literally need your body for everything until the day you die, it is not something which should be physically neglected.

And yet a majority of people in Western society do exactly that.

They deprive their bodies of physical exercise, sufficient rest and last but not least, they refuse to eat a healthy diet high in animal protein and fats.

Most Western people and especially women, walk around like fat hogs, stuffing themselves with sugar and carbohydrates; until they suffer continuously from joint pains, organ failure, premature aging and physical overall weakness.

Your overall quality of life simply isn’t that good when you’re fat.

Being fat means endless physical deterioration, laziness, sluggishness, dullness of the nerves and senses, depression, weakness and constant anxiety.

Now I can already hear the counter-arguments that all these fat fucks are going to make…

“But anorexic and skinny people aren’t healthy either…”

Anorexic and skinny people aren’t a problem in Western society, we don’t have surplus of underweight folks but rather we have fat stupid pigs in abundance.

Why do I call them stupid?

Because deliberate malnutrition and physical neglect of your body is a sign of low intelligence.

“Why, even in the process of thinking, in which the use of the body seems to be reduced to a minimum, it is matter of common knowledge that grave mistakes may often be traced to bad health. And because the body is in a bad condition, loss of memory, depression, discontent, insanity often assail the mind so violently as to drive whatever knowledge it contains clean out of it.”

Memorabilia: Book 3, Chapter 12, Section 6

The body and the mind are connected.

If the body is unhealthy then the mind is unhealthy.

This is a fact of nature, proven by any scientific endeavor.

Even in the time of Socrates, this was a matter of “common knowledge”, the Philosophers were not debating this matter.

Rather, they were being reminded by Socrates that this was indeed to be true.

Neglecting the body is the work of a fool.

Most depression is nothing but a sign of being physically unhealthy.

The mind always represents the literal contents of the body.

Have you ever talked to a vegan before? They literally show all the mental signs of physical malnutrition and neglect.

They’re always depressed, angry, discontent, anxious, mentally inferior and eventually they’ll turn insane.

You can’t think straight when your body is truly hungry and when you lack vital macro-nutrients and micro-nutrients in your diet, then you’re finished man.

You mentally just won’t work, you’re done like Epigenes.

“But a sound and healthy body is a strong protection to a man, and at least there is no danger then of such a calamity happening to him through physical weakness: on the contrary, it is likely that his sound condition will serve to produce effects the opposite of those that arise from bad condition. And surely a man of sense would submit to anything to obtain the effects that are the opposite of those mentioned in my list.”

Memorabilia: Book 3, Chapter 12, Section 7

And surely a man of sense would submit to anything to obtain the effects that are the opposite of those mentioned in Socrates’s list…

But that was in 400 BC, now in 2019 AD, there aren’t many sensible men left.

That is why there is a man like me that is literally having to write out an article like this, which could be understood by mere children but now it is grown-ups that need to be schooled on the importance of partaking in physical activity.

Most men lack courageousness nowadays, they aren’t as harsh as their male ancestors.

This is mainly because we’re actually physically softer than those who came before us, with our heavily soy induced vegetable and sugar diets.

Meanwhile our ancestors ate huge amounts of game meat, cattle and fish which fearlessly propelled them all the way to battlefields where they literally slaughtered other men.

Not saying violence is this beautiful romantic thing, but me being a realist truly believe that extreme physical activity still must be mainly pursued for self-defense and in order to acquire the ability to partake in fights.

That is why I practiced martial arts for years, competed in Kickboxing and ended up in countless street fights throughout my teenage youthful life.

And I can truly say that it took the fear of physical harm out of me.

Unlike 99% of men nowadays who are scared to fight, and run away at the sight of any “bad” guy.

Being physically strong as a man (not as a woman) makes you fearless, courageous, trustworthy and outspoken.

No other man can scare you into submission, when shit hits the fan you’re the first one that hits back; your woman, children and family can rely on your protection and you’ll never shy away from stating your opinion and facts.

“Besides, it is a disgrace to grow old through sheer carelessness before seeing what manner of man you may become by developing your bodily strength and beauty to their highest limit. But you cannot see that, if you are careless; for it will not come of its own accord.”

Memorabilia: Book 3, Chapter 12, Section 8

Most men will never discover their true purpose, passion, mission or drive towards success in this life.

A majority of these vegetable chewers we have walking around nowadays are nothing but a bunch of mentally incapacitated soy boys.

No opinions of themselves, always licking the butt-holes of their fat bosses and degenerate women.

This is because they neglect the most important thing they have in this physical world, which is their body.

Never knowing their true potential because they’ve been dimming their internal fires with the wrong foods and the utter neglect of physical exercise.

But most men will never realize that they’re destroying their own potential, because as Socrates said:

“But you cannot see that, if you are careless; for it will not come of its own accord.”

Most people need to suffer from cancer, diabetes, a stroke or 2 heart attacks before they refrain from physical carelessness.

They’re used to being fat and most of them will continue to do so with utter disregard and selfishness.
